How to Choose a Villa for a Family Holiday

A villa that looks great in photos and a villa that actually works for a family with kids aren't always the same thing. Here's what to check before you book, not after you arrive.

Pool safety

Ask about the depth and whether there's a shallow end, whether there's a fence or a lockable gate, and how slippery the surrounding tiles get. For families with young children this matters more than an infinity edge with an ocean view.

Layout and privacy

A kids' bedroom next to the parents' room, rather than across the house, matters more than it seems at booking stage. Ask about the separation between bedrooms and shared living areas — an open floor plan doesn't always mean a quiet evening for the adults.

Kitchen and meals

With kids it's often easier to cook at least some meals yourself. Check whether the kitchen is fully equipped (not just a stove, but cookware, a blender, a bottle steriliser if needed), and whether a cook can be booked for specific days rather than the whole stay.

Location

A gently sloping entry into calm water matters more than proximity to bars. Areas like Maenam or Choeng Mon are usually more practical for families than central Chaweng.

What to ask the owner or agent

• Is there a travel cot, high chair, baby crib
• Does air conditioning work in every bedroom, not just the living room
• How many minutes on foot to a beach with a gentle entry
• Is there a first-aid kit and a nearby clinic contact
• What's included in cleaning — daily or on request
