Getting to Your Villa on Koh Samui: Airport, Transfers, Car Rental

5 min read

Koh Samui is an island, so you can only get here by plane (its own airport, USM) or by ferry from the mainland. How you plan that last leg decides whether the holiday starts with traffic-jam irritation or with a calm arrival.

Direct flight or ferry

Direct flights to Koh Samui run from Bangkok, Phuket and a few other cities, but tickets cost more than mainland routes. The more budget-friendly route is flying into Surat Thani on a bigger carrier and taking the ferry across — slower, but noticeably cheaper, especially for a larger family.

Airport transfer

Koh Samui's airport is small, and taxis and transfers wait right outside, but the price depends heavily on whether you negotiate. It's simpler to arrange the transfer with the villa in advance — a driver meets you with a name board, and the price is already agreed.

Do you need to rent a car

  • A villa in Chaweng or Bophut with everything nearby — a car isn't essential, much of it is walkable
  • A villa in Maenam, Choeng Mon or further from the centre — a car or scooter makes life noticeably easier
  • With kids, a car with a driver is more reliable than a scooter
  • An international driving permit is required to rent either a car or a scooter

Drive time from the airport to each area

  • Choeng Mon — 10–15 minutes
  • Chaweng, Bophut — 15–25 minutes
  • Maenam — 25–35 minutes
  • Lamai, Lipa Noi — 35–50 minutes

When you book a villa through us, we arrange the airport transfer in advance — just send your flight details and a driver will be waiting when you land.
